Kurilsky Nature Reserve
Kurilsky State Nature Reserve is the first nature reserve in Sakhalin Region.

The nature reserve was established on 10 February 1984 in order to preserve the unique nature of the islands that is important for both science and economy and for restoration of various plant and animal species.

Territory
The territory of the nature reserve comprises three areas: two of them are on Kunashir Island, the third one is on the Dyomina Islands and the Oskolki Islands.

The area of the nature reserve is 659 square kilometers (0,75% of Sakhalin Region).

There are protective zones around the nature reserve:

  • terrestrial (400 square kilometers),
  • marine (261 square kilometers).

      The director manages the institution. He is in charge of his deputies and chief accountant who manage staff.
